If there was a magic fix for workplace safety every safety manager would find a way to get their hands on it, but the reality is that facility safety and how to achieve it is different for every site. Dangers are different and there for proactive actions and reactions need to adjust accordingly. Just because your workers aren’t hanging off of skyscrapers or working around heavy machinery does not mean there shouldn’t be a safety program in place.
Does it seem like your work place doesn’t need to focus on safety? Think again, and here’s why:
- Did you know that the average OSHA fine is $1,000? Seems low right? That means you don’t have to have a huge incident to get on OSHAs radar. Lack of proper signage, your workers being unaware and improperly trained around hazards will do the trick; and once OSHA finds one violation, it might make it all the easier to find more.
- Over 4,000 deaths a year. That is about 12 deaths a day. 12 workers just like you who won’t return to their families over an accident that most likely could have been prevented.
- Fall protection has been atop the most commonly cited standards for the past 5 years. That doesn’t mean falling from heights. In fact most workplace incidents regarding falls are caused by same level hazards.
- The average person spends over 90,000 hours at work in their lifetime. That is 5,400,000 minutes, or 324,000,000 seconds that your workers are exposed to hazards that could end in injury or worse. That is a lot of risk that needs to be accounted for.
- Ergonomics reduce workplace safety costs. Overexertion is universal and the leading reason for workers compensation claims. A great way to prevent injuries like these is through ergonomics. Working smarter, leads to better productivity and higher workplace morale.
- No position is safe from workplace dangers. The biggest mistake facilities make is assuming that injuries, workplace violence, or worse workplace deaths will never happen. Human error is real , no one is perfect, and everyone has their limits. There is no magic solution, or easy fix but making sure workplace safety procedures are updated routinely is a great first step in protecting your employees.
